cook/archuleta (1440 words)

So this is a scene from an Ocean's 11 AU, which is probably going...absolutely nowhere. Ever again. I just watched it last night and was incredibly intrigued all over again by Rusty and Danny's relationship and how Tess is pointless compared to them, THUS. (Plus, okay, if I wrote this, WHO WOULD BE TESS? WHO WOULD COOK BE "FIGHTING FOR"? the only person I can think of is Ryan Seacrest, okay, AND THAT'S WEIRD.)

David sees Cook for the first time in four years in the back room of the club he's been teaching poker to smalltime actors and actresses in. He allows him to clean up

(Although Jared and Jensen folded pretty early in, thankfully; he likes them, and actually doesn't really know what they're doing in his little "classes" since both of them are pretty good. He suspects they're using this to con the slower actors and actresses out of their money, and, being a fellow con artist, can appreciate this, as his money isn't on the line)

the boys and girls who never had a chance and follows him out of the club after, trading a brief look with him before leading Cook to his car. Cook collapses in the passenger seat and lets out a sigh.

"You look miserable, David," Cook says, grinning a little, and David says miserably, "You can tell?"

It's been four years because Cook's been in prison thanks to that stupid heist he pulled in Los Angeles. David is simultaneously glad and frustrated that he wasn't involved (um, jail would suck. It really would. But if he'd been handling the job, Cook wouldn't have been caught) in that whole ordeal, but right now that seems so far away -- Cook is out, and he's got to have another plan. David is done with trying to teach the trade to washed up red carpet people -- he sometimes feels like he's showing them more inventive ways of playing go-fish most of the time.

They stop in a bar and Cook orders a beer while David gets water, and Cook's eyes gleam at him. "Some things never change," he comments, and David merely pointedly takes a sip of water and watches Cook.

"Okay," Cook continues, rolling his eyes. "No bullshit, right?"

"What's the job?" David says, fighting a smile.

"I hear Vegas is lovely this time of year," Cook answers breezily, and David swallows roughly.

"A casino? You want to knock over a casino?"

Cook merely holds up three fingers.

"Oh my heck--" David starts, but then quiets and thinks about it. Cook has had years to think about this, and he wouldn't suggest it if he didn't think it was possible. Cook might be a crazy guy, but he was a crazy guy who knew his limits. "Which casinos?"

"The Bellagio, the MGM Grand, and the Mirage." Cook takes a long pull of his beer and watches David's reaction to that with his bright eyes. David closes his eyes and thinks about it. Keeps reminding himself that Cook has to have a plan.

"Those are Cowell's casinos, Cook."

"Are they?" Cook says, sounding genuinely surprised. It just serves to further highlight that he knows this very well.

"He doesn't mess around," David comments, but he's already plotting, the thrill of another gig sending adrenaline racing through his veins. "It'd need a big team. And a big payoff for how dangerous as heck it's gonna be."

"$169 million big enough?" Cook tosses the number out casually. "That's how much'll be in that central vault on the night we'll rob it, the night of that big fight coming up."

"Oh my gosh," David says, excitement growing -- the idea of that much money is thrilling, but he's starting to catch onto the idea of it, the idea of working with Cook again. This, this is the happiest he's been since Cook got locked up. Working with Cook isn't like working with anyone else.

(In some part of him, David knows exactly why this is true, but he also knows nothing is going to come of it, so he instead focuses on the anticipation for the job, focuses on what they're gonna need to make it happen.)

"This is going to take a heck of a lot of funding," he says instead of all the things he's thinking, and Cook raises his brows.

"You think of anyone who has a grudge against Cowell and billions?"

"Too many people," David laughs, but thinks about it anyways. "Carly?"

"Got it in one," Cook grins, and David sips at his water consideringly.

"She'd take a bit of convincing. And we'd need to have the best to convince her. Who'd we have on the inside?"

"You remember Syesha? She's been working in New York, but the cold weather, ah, it's been making her lose her voice. She's putting in a transfer for sunny Vegas."

"Alright," David says, because Syesha's good at what she does. She's also kind of hilarious, which is something they'll need, just to keep spirits high. "What about the Castro brothers?"

"Already contacted them -- they're upset they'll have to tone down the hair to be in on it, but willing. I think they've been a bit bored, to be honest." The Castro brothers live in Texas, and are the best for infiltrating. Despite their flashy appearances, they are great at blending and causing the right kind of scenes.

"Okay." David is making lists of contacts and places and meetings and sources they'll need in his head. This is what he's good at.

"What d'you know about Johns?" Cook asks, finishing his beer and stealing a gulp of David's water. David makes a face.

"He's in town, but possibly not accessible."

Cook rolls his eyes. "Did he take on another stupid job?"

"Yeah," David admits. "You know Michael. He just likes blowing stuff up. The people he works with aren't really the best in the business."

"Yeah, because that's us," Cook reminds him, and David's stomach jumps. He irritably tells it to calm down. "We'll just have to break him before he gets taken in. Okay, we'll need Ramiele, too."

"She's working in a circus show right now, but I'll find her," David says, adding her to the list. "What about Brooke?"

"Already got her, too. She's been working for the FBI, I think, hacking cameras and shit. She's willing and ready to get away from those pricks. Says they keep trying to mess with her equipment like they didn't hire her because they know nothing about it."

"Is she doing okay?" David wants to know, because he's always liked Brooke, and Cook nods, mouth curving.

"Alright, we'll definitely need Jackson for this one."

David shakes his head. "He's in retirement, Cook. In Florida watching races or whatever. With old people."

"Well, we'll just have to convince him otherwise, I guess," Cook shrugs, and David sighs. Cook doesn't really acknowledge when other people are ready to let go of the game -- possibly because he's right. You don't quit this game. You keep going until you're stopped. "Okay, that's ten. You think that's good?"

David is silent, just looks at him.

"No?" Cook waits for a second and then nods once. "You're right, one more. What about Iraheta?"

"She's dead," David says shortly. He doesn't like to think about it, and hasn't thought about it since it happened two years ago. It wasn't even on the job -- some jerks in a drive-by had shot her when she'd been picking up groceries in a convenience store. It still stung to think about.

"Holy shit," Cook breathes, scrubs a hand over his face and goes silent. They'd both liked her, and she'd been one of the few really good ones. The ones you could trust on any job because they knew what they were doing, what was okay and what crossed lines, even for thieves.

"But," David continues after a respectful moment, "she had a daughter. Allison. I've heard she was just as good as her mom, maybe better."

"Huh," Cook hums under his breath, and looks thoughtful. "New blood might come in handy."

"All depends," David allows, but he can pretty much see where Cook is going with it. Sometimes having someone unused to their relationship could come in handy -- David wasn't mean by nature, but sometimes being manipulative had its perks. It wasn't unusual to fake a fight, and actually it was kind of funny -- he and Cook never fought over jobs. Other stuff? Sure, but with jobs? They were pretty much one person in two bodies. David liked the way they worked together, liked that they could read each others' minds and actions so easily.

"Alright, I'll get the newbie and you track down Jackson. Get some sun in you," Cook smirks, and David flushes a little.

"Like you can talk. I doubt you had much time to sunbathe in a prison cell," he shoots back, and Cook barks out a laugh.

"Jesus Christ," he says, wrapping an arm around David's neck, "I have missed you, David."

Me too, David doesn't say.

I love that even as a con-man David would still be David and say things like "Oh my heck." ♥

Also, omg... agreed. Ryan? Very weird. Maybe he could be fighting for um... Andrew? His brother? In a totally non-sexual more moral type of way. Like Andrew got all wooed over to working for Simon and Simon is EVIL and there is no way Cook would let Andrew do that?
hello beautifulhopefulgenius on August 2nd, 2009 03:22 am (UTC)
ngl, i considered him fighting for andrew but then i was like "okay, that sort of makes sense but also is kind of douchey since for all cook knows, simon is actually a really awesome person. plus i want david to be like :( :( :( when he finds out that "tess" is there and therefore that's a reason everyone buys that he's not letting cook in on the job.

LMFAO but idk, i'm definitely not writing, so. (mostly i just see ryan being the only person who would BE WITH SIMON.)

I LOVE OCEANS 11 AU'S. I've read like 2 SO FAR IN MY LIFE (besides this one!), and they are always so fun.

I just have to say that my favorite thing EVER is Michael Johns being cast in Basher's role. IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE TO ME FOR SOME REASON. I don't understand why/how. D:

LOVED IT! Very fun read! I needed it for suuuuure. :D

i read an Ocean's 11 AU for bandom and the only good part was the casting involved. like, the story was pretty much WORD FOR WORD the movie, and after 20,000 words, that gets old.

:) glad you liked it!

Ohhh, Meg, such a treat to read both this and Nat's Future Unknown in my filter this morning!

I confess I know zippo about Ocean's Eleven (too distracted by the prettay that is Cloons), but I have to say, Cook as Clooney, and the Top 11 as Ocean's 11, is a hella clever concept, and a kickass fun read ;) Hope you decide to continue this.

And Seacrest as Julia Roberts? +sobbing with laughter, jsyk.

LMFAO well I THINK IT WOULD WORK, OKAY. i am actually quite sold on the idea. i think he would be a wonderful tess.

Haha, Archie.

OMG, I want to see the rest of this. It's somewhere....right?

Maybe Cook could be (could have been?) close friends with Seacrest? Maybe he's a friend of a close friend? Paula's paying him to get Ryan away so she can get with Simon? IDK. I love the idea of Seacrest as Tess though. <3
hello beautifulhopefulgenius on August 2nd, 2009 06:01 am (UTC)
well, if it were somewhere, it should stay there until write my stinking big bang. i do not HAVE TIME FOR THIS.

i thought of the good friend thing! i am just too enamored with the idea of ryan as tess now, that has to be it now. idk, either it's like an ex he counts as a friend or someone he pretended to be with OR SOMETHING, all i know is david must get jealous.

OH MY FUCKING GOD. MEG. MEG. JFC. THIS IS MY MIND, OKAY. CONSIDER IT BLOWN. (AND ALSO MY OVARIES, BUT NNNNGH, I FEEL LIKE THAT NO LONGER COMES AS A SURPRISE TO ANYONE.) just - nnngh, i love this movie so freaking much, idek, and it's pitt + clooney, okay, possibly two of the hottest old men in the business, and their chemistry in ocean's is like nothing i have ever seen, right, and then--

THEN YOU DO THIS. and you just, you take this completely insane, amazing premise and NINJA THE IDOLS INTO IT, OH MY GOD, SERIOUSLY, SERIOUSLY, fucking fuck, my life, and they're all just PERFECT for their roles, every one of them, and i was just clapping gleefully to myself every time you revealed someone new (THE CASTRO BROTHERS, MY FAVOURITE ♥ ♥ ♥ AND RAMI! NNNGH) and it just all panned out so brilliantly, like the hint of tension and WANT and--NNNNNNNGH. AFJSKNHGIFOJKL.

i have to admit i was a little skeptical of archie being able to fit in this verse when you said you were thinking about it at first, BUT SERIOUSLY, SO PERFECT, GAH, you and your WRITING <3333 i am never, ever doubting you again! ♥ just - so amazing, meg, right down to where you decided to end the whole thing.

(although i just wanted to add that kim caldwell could totally be tess. or maybe andrew is just the deadweight younger brother that nobody likes, or maybe him and david used to have a thing, but it didn't end well. or maybe it could be one of cook's ex boyfriends. like andy. or neal. or--okay, clearly i have put too much thought into this. ahem. hi, i love you, you're brilliant.)
Cate_workinprogress on August 2nd, 2009 12:44 pm (UTC)
I haven't gotten to the actual story yet, but he could be fighting for Carly? You know the type of relationship where they are lovers, but more than that they're friends. (And eventually, they can take or leave the lovers part, and then Carly snarks on Archie&Cook's relationship, while she joins their little team).
Cate_workinprogress on August 2nd, 2009 12:53 pm (UTC)
Okay, so I should have read the story first, since Carly is already in it.

But Kim! With the love and the hate for her in this fandom, I think she'd be pretty much perfect.
And she'd probably make a totally awesome addition to the team. (Every con team should have at least a couple of women on board who'll do the flirting and wrap a few men around this little fingers).

And oh my gosh, I love this story. I want MOAR. Can you tell?

ALSO, OH MYGOSH, THIS WHOLE THING IS AMAZING. I've only vaguely seen the movie, I think I, uh, stopped paying attention halfway through and I have it mixed up with Ocean's 12 in my head, but the casting here was brilliant! Amazing! And the Cook/David dynamic, I love it.

And your David is totally believable as a hustler (drinking water! "heck of a lot of funding!") because he's still so David, idek, I LOVE THIS. WHY ISN'T THERE MORE ;_________;

hello beautifulhopefulgenius on August 5th, 2009 09:59 pm (UTC)
OH SNAP, ACE, YOU SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER. if i could've found allison's mom's name (without having to look anywhere but wiki, i'm lazy) i would've! and i mean, well, IT'S ALL PART OF THE SURPRISE~~~ but lmfao, it took nat FOREVER to guess who it was gonna be.

i don't know if i've seen ocean's 12. i should do that. holy crap, my favorite thing about the movie is the danny/rusty dynamic, all the finishing each other's thoughts thing and how they know what to do and also idk, RUSTY IS ALWAYS EATING and that's precious to me.

idk, it's kind of unbelievable (david, stealing money for no reason, hahahahaha) but I CALL ARTISTIC LICENSE. ♥ as usual, your comment sends me into palpitation of joy. :)

Okay so I love Archie being all innocent but still a con man, and that makes no sense but um, you know what I mean? And okay, I saw Ocean's Eleven AGES ago, so I barely remember it, but I looove Archie's attraction to Cook and the ending was awesome ALTHOUGH THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE, OKAY.
hello beautifulhopefulgenius on August 5th, 2009 10:02 pm (UTC)
lmfao, it does not make sense at all, BUT I AM OKAY WITH THAT IN MY HEAD. :) ugh, it's such a fun movie, even if none of it makes sense or is believable. i love the characters and i love brad pitt, i think it's some of his best work. he just does carefree con man so fucking good. okay, enough about pitt, he is bearded and not as hot right now. time for ILY and your COMPLETE AWESOME PRI~~~
